Architecture with your
hands on the tools.

Design and build Digital Twin and Industrial IoT systems that connect physical environments, operational data and intelligent software. Work across sensors, edge, cloud and applications on real-world projects in construction, smart cities, logistics and industry.

At SmartAvatar, a Digital Twin is not just a 3D model. It is data, state, events, history and physical context. As our Digital Twin & Industrial IoT Lead, you will design and build systems that connect physical environments, operational data and intelligent software — from the sensor all the way to the application. Around 75% of your time will be dedicated to direct engineering. You will work on applications across construction, smart cities, logistics and industry, collaborating with systems architects, AI engineers, software developers and technical partners. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Delft, South Holland, Netherlands. The role is offered under a four-year fixed-term employment contract, with the possibility of transitioning to a permanent position after 18 months based on mutual fit, performance and company needs.

02 / Your contribution

What you will own

  • Design Digital Twin architectures representing physical assets, environments and processes
  • Model assets, relationships, events, state changes, history and provenance
  • Create reusable Digital Twin components for construction, smart-city, logistics and industrial use cases
  • Integrate sensors, devices, operational data, APIs and external systems
  • Build telemetry, ingestion, transformation, storage and synchronisation pipelines
  • Engineer systems that handle unstable connectivity, late data, duplicate events and inconsistent timestamps
  • Expose Digital Twin data to APIs, dashboards, AI models and analytics services
  • Work across edge and cloud environments
  • Define and monitor KPIs for synchronisation, latency, reliability and data quality
  • Collaborate with systems architects, AI engineers, software developers and technical partners

03 / Your experience

What you bring

The experience and capabilities we are looking for.

  • 3+ years of experience in Digital Twins, IoT, industrial software, data engineering, robotics, embedded systems or edge systems
  • Strong software engineering skills, preferably Python plus at least one other technology stack
  • Experience with APIs, data integration, telemetry and event-driven systems
  • Experience with MQTT or comparable messaging technologies
  • Experience with relational and/or time-series databases
  • Experience with Docker or other containerised environments
  • Understanding of cloud and edge computing concepts
  • BSc or MSc in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Robotics or a related field — or equivalent industry experience
  • Excellent communication skills in English
An added advantage

Useful additional experience

These skills are welcome, but are not essential requirements.

  • Experience with OPC UA, Kafka, TimescaleDB, InfluxDB, edge gateways or industrial automation
  • Experience with BIM/IFC, GIS, knowledge graphs, semantic models or Digital Twin standards
  • Experience with LiDAR, point clouds, RGB/thermal sensing, robotics, ROS or 5G/industrial connectivity
  • Experience deploying Digital Twin or IoT systems in real industrial environments

04 / Working with us

What we offer

  • Four-year fixed-term employment contract, with the possibility of transitioning to a permanent position after 18 months based on mutual fit, performance and company needs
  • Competitive compensation based on your experience
  • Technical leadership of a core capability in a growing deep-tech company
  • Work on real-world industrial, infrastructure and smart-city challenges — not only lab demonstrations
  • Collaboration with colleagues and technical specialists in the Netherlands, across the EU and globally
  • An office in Delft, at the heart of the Dutch technology ecosystem
